The Nirmul Committee

Nirmul Committee is a Bengali voluntary organisation set up to promote Bengali history & culture to the widerEvent

Some current activities of the Nirmul Committee:

  • The Swadhinata Trust - Educating second & third generation British Bengalis about their historical, cultural & linguistic roots;
  • The Baishakhi Mela - The biggest annual open air Bengali new year festival in UK/Europe. Nirmul Committee is a founder member of the festival;
  • Shahid Minar 1999 - The Shahid Minar (martyrs monument): is a homage to the Bengali students who laid down their lives in 1952 to establish Bengali as one of the state languages of Pakistan. The central Shahid Minar is situated in Dhaka, capital city of Bangladesh.
  • A replica of the Shahid Minar was erected in Altab Ali Park, Whitechapel, Banglatown. E1 in 1999. Prior to this another Shahid Minar was erected in Oldham. On the 21 February (known as Martyrs Day) of every year Bengali community pay respect and remember the martyrs.
  • The Nirmul Committee was instrumental in erecting the Shahid Minar in Altab Ali Park and is a founder member of Kendrio Shahid Minar (in Altab Ali Park).

  • It also produces a Bengali info-magazine aimed at young people and produced by young people (see the Magazine link under the Activities menu);
  • There are plans to produce a number of publications and films/videos. These will highlight prominent figures of Bangladesh and cover subjects relevant to the Bengali community.
  • Campaign work
  • Banglatown: The Nirmul Committee along with other community organisations and community activists campaigned for Brick Lane and the surrounding area to be named Banglatown as an acknowledgement of the biggest Bengali settlement in the UK. In 1997, Tower Hamlets Council formally declared Brick Lane and the surrounding area Banglatown and in 2001 the electoral ward of Spitalfields was renamed as Spitalfields and Banglatown Ward.   • Holocaust Memorial Day 2004: Holocaust Memorial Day: Every year The Jewish East End Celebration Society (JEECS) and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day with a programme of events. Lasr year (2004) the Nirmul Committee took part in the commemoration with other faith communities: Holocaust Memorial Day 2004
