What is the Sylhet Partnership Project?

The SPP is a European Union funded project. It is funded through the Asia Urbs Programme.

What is the Asia Urbs Programme?

It is a new European Union development programme, which will fund tripartite projects based in Asia countries. The programme aims to promote mutual understanding and lasting co-operation between European and Asian regions in the challenges of urban regeneration.

Where is the project based?

The project is based in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Why has Tower Hamlets, Sylhet and Denmark become partners for this project?

Tower Hamlets as the lead partner, chose to work with Sylhet because of existing links it has with Sylhet. These include, the existing twinning accord between Tower Hamlets and Sylhet, and the fact that Tower Hamlets is home to the largest Sylheti community outside of Bangladesh. The involvement of Horsens, our third partner, was because of its long track record and experience of working in health development in Bangladesh, and its expertise in related issues.

What work will Tower Hamlets, Sylhet and Denmark on this project?

Tower Hamlets will lead on urban regeneration issues and project management issues and is the accountable body for the overall project. Horsens will lead on technical expertise on health and women's issues in Sylhet. Sylhet will be the beneficiary partner. It will share in the mutual experiences and exchanges and provide day to day support to the project director.

How long will the project last?

The project is for 2 years starting January 2001.

What will happen to the company after the 2 years?

If new sources of funds are found then it is expected that the company will continue to operate at the end of 2 years as an urban regeneration company.
